Hooks

The comparison

A comparison hook pits two options your audience is torn between. The video promises to settle it with concrete criteria.

Structure

[Option A] or [option B] for [goal]? I tried both.

Why it works

Choosing between two options is a situation everyone knows, and the doubt is uncomfortable. A comparison promises to clear it up fast. The viewer often already has an opinion and stays to see whether it’s confirmed or challenged. The two-column format is also very readable on screen: two objects, two shots, two versions.

When to use it

  • When your audience genuinely hesitates between two common choices.
  • For a hands-on test where you’ve used both options.
  • To compare two methods rather than two brands.

Pitfalls

  • Trashing a brand or competitor: compare use cases, not reputations.
  • Not giving a clear verdict, or giving one with no criteria.
  • Comparing two options that don’t serve the same purpose.

FAQ

Should I pick a winner?

Yes, or at least a recommendation by profile: “if you…, pick A; if you…, pick B”. A clear verdict is what the viewer came for.

Can I compare two brands?

You can compare products you’ve actually used, with factual criteria. Avoid trash talk and claims you can’t back up.

How do I make a comparison visual?

Film both options in the same conditions, side by side or alternating, with each one’s name in on-screen text.
