Caption

Also called : post caption, video description, post copy, légende

Definition

A caption is the text that accompanies a published video, below or next to it. It complements the video, adds context and can carry a call to action and hashtags.

Why captions matter

A caption gives context to people who want more, helps them follow the topic without sound and can kick off a conversation in the comments. Its words also help describe what your video is about. It doesn’t replace a good hook: most viewers watch before they read.

How to write a caption for short-form video

  • Open with a line that extends the hook without repeating it word for word.
  • Add something useful: an ingredient, a setting, a step, a source.
  • End with a question or a simple invitation.
  • Example: on a travel video, “The night train I should have taken years ago. Have you tried it?”

Common caption mistakes

  • Copying the on-screen text exactly.
  • Burying the caption under hashtags.
  • Using the same caption on every network regardless of how each is used.
In Flowers

When you publish, Flowers lets you prepare a text variant for each network: your Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts captions can differ for the same video.

FAQ

How long should a caption be?

It depends on the network and the topic. A short caption is often enough for an entertaining video; a tutorial can justify more detail. Character limits vary by platform and change over time, so check them when you publish.

Are captions and on-screen text the same thing?

No. On-screen text is part of the video and is read while watching. The caption is published alongside and is read before or after.
